Keep the first attempt honest
A marked answer can tell you far more than its score, provided it records what you could do at the time. Try the question before opening the solution. If you use your notes or ask for a hint, mark the point where you needed help. That makes the answer a useful record instead of a mixture of your knowledge and someone else’s explanation.
There’s nothing wrong with supported practice while you’re learning. Just distinguish it from an independent attempt. A correct answer reached with a worked example beside you answers a different question from one produced with the example closed.
Name the gap before choosing the revision
Read the question again, then compare your answer with the feedback. Was a fact missing? Did you use the right concept in the wrong situation? Did your reasoning stop before reaching the result? Or did you answer a different question from the one on the page?
Be specific enough that the diagnosis suggests an action. ‘I need to improve Chemistry’ tells you very little. ‘I confused an intermolecular force with a covalent bond’ points to a distinction you can study and then test. ‘I forgot the unit’ needs a checking habit, not another hour on the whole topic.
An answer can contain more than one problem. Start with the one that prevented the rest of the reasoning from working; correcting its spelling first won’t repair its explanation.
Look for the missing link
Consider this answer to a question about why a rise in the price of a good might reduce quantity demanded: ‘People buy less because it is more expensive.’ It states the change, but gives little account of a consumer’s decision.
Depending on the course and question, a fuller explanation might show how the good becomes more expensive relative to substitutes, giving consumers a reason to switch. The added value comes from that link. Repeating ‘the price is higher’ in a second sentence doesn’t supply it.
In a calculation, the missing link may be a conversion or a substitution into an equation. In a literature response, it may be the explanation connecting a quoted word to your interpretation. Locate the point where a reader has to do the work you left unstated.
Rewrite the part that needs work
Keep what’s correct. Rewrite the sentence, line of working or paragraph that contains the gap, then compare the two versions. You should be able to point to what the revision adds: a reason, a piece of evidence, an accurate term or an answer to the actual command word.
Use the marking approach for your subject. Some questions award separate points; others judge the quality of a whole response. A longer answer doesn’t automatically deserve more credit. For official practice papers, use the board’s mark scheme and ask your teacher when an expectation is unclear.
If feedback seems inconsistent with the question, investigate it. AI feedback can be mistaken, and a polished explanation isn’t proof that the judgement is right. NovaLearn’s feedback is something to work with, not a reason to stop checking your reasoning.
Change the question before declaring it fixed
Immediately copying a corrected answer can show that you followed the correction. It can’t tell you whether you will recognise the same idea somewhere else. Try another question with a different example, set of numbers or source extract, keeping the previous answer out of view.
Choose a manageable change. If you have just repaired one step in a calculation, practise that step in a similar problem before combining it with three unfamiliar concepts. Then return to a related question in a later session to check what you can still do independently.
Keep a record short enough to use
An error log needs only a question reference, the problem and the next action. For example: ‘Price question: described the change without explaining substitution. Next time, connect the price comparison to the consumer’s choice.’
